GoT’s Plan to Block Season 8 Spoilers

By | 14th September 2017

Production on Game of Thrones Season 8 starts soon. The season is the last one, so we’ll finally find out what happens to everyone (who is still alive). But after the leaks of two Season 7 episodes, the shows creators are understandably cautious about spoilers. To combat that, HBO’s president of programming, Casey Bloys told The Morning Call that the team is shooting multiple endings.

Bloys said, “You have to do that on a long show. Because when you’re shooting something, people know. So they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that there’s no real definitive answer until the end.”

Game of Thrones‘ multiple endings aren’t the first ones in pop-culture history

Game of Thrones isn’t the only property to shoot multiple endings. The most famous production to have done so is the much beloved cult classic Clue. The comedic mystery had three different endings, each shown in different theaters.

Unlike Game of Thrones, the Clue endings were all meant to be seen. Most likely, if we see any of the alternate Game of Thrones endings, it’ll be as bonus features on a Blu-ray.

The Simpsons also experimented with multiple endings. In the 1995 episode, “Who Shot Mr. Burns?“, producer and showrunner David Mirkin wrote several endings. On the commentary track for the episode, Mirkin calls the endings “terrible” and describes how he and Harry Shearer recorded them.

The use of alternate endings had two purposes. The obvious reason was to keep the production staff from leaking the ending. Mirkin also planned to leak some of the alternate endings to the media. Unfortunately, these leaks never happened, but Simpsons fans got to see the alternate endings in the “138th Episode Spectacular.”

Details about Game of Thrones Season 8

So far, there isn’t any word of what any of the Game of Thrones endings are. Season 8 of Game of Thrones begins shooting later this year. The new season will only be six episodes long. Don’t be too sad — each episode is rumored to be feature-length.

HBO doesn’t have the new season on their schedule yet. It should air either in 2018 or 2019. Past seasons have been just a year apart, though. Following the pattern, Season 8 will probably start airing in Summer 2018.
